Amnesia

Floopy the mouse sat on the window sill. White rings floated in her vision and her body ached. She felt as if she had recovered from a blackout. Just then she heard a faint sound of a paw hitting the floor boards and realized to her horror that the filthy obese house cat Morgan was close by. She had to get away, and fast! The window sill was an easy jump for the monster.

Floopy frantically surveyed the kitchen and saw the open skylight on the opposite wall. If only she could reach there! Jumping aboard the cabinets under the skylight was the easy part; the trick lay in crossing the open floor. She heard the cat again and judged that she was some distance away, probably in a crawl.

Floopy eyed the chopping board sticking out from the kitchen shelf running between the two walls. She gathered air in her lungs, courage in her heart and jumped, only to land short of the appliance. One of her claws caught the edge of the board and she desperately gripped it and hung on, as panic gripped her whole body. She knew she was dangling like a carrot that no cat would want to miss. No sir, not a chance!

Even as her mind buzzed frantically, her grip slipped and she flopped down on the floor. Shuddering with fear, she pretended to be dead! She could have sworn the cat's open jaw was hairs away from her neck when a crow flapped in noisily and sat on the other side of the window. The cat was distracted!

Floopy saw her chance, and hopped onto the pantry shelf under the skylight. And then the cat turned back! She eyed Floopy for a second, and then with a ferocious meow, she jumped. The moment froze for Floopy, and she was aware of the cat seemingly floating mid-air, slowly inching closer. And then her memory came back! I'm a bird, realised Floopy with a rush of surprise and glee! She spread her wings and dashed towards the skylight just as the feline landed on the shelf with a loud crash.
